4 Lessons From A 39-Year Old Influencer

I turned 39 last week...but that didn't prevent me from shamelessly making infotainment videos for you.

Let me back up.
😆

When I became a life coach, I had no idea how much there was to it besides sitting down with moms and having profound conversations to help them become the people they wanted to be.

There's marketing. And website-making. And newsletter-writing. And public speaking. And networking. And talking about yourself. And looking for partnerships to expand the circle of people who know about you.

Anyway - when Instagram rolled out a new video format called Reels (its version of TikTok), I kept hearing what a great way it was for small business owners to get the word out about their businesses.

Plus, they can be super entertaining and silly.

So I tried making some Reels. And actually really enjoyed it.

Then one of them hit over 1,500 views and I just...froze.

I had ideas, sure, but kept overthinking them.

I wanted the perfect song, the perfect video clips, the perfect lighting, the perfect editing. I was putting so much pressure on the next video to be 'popular' that I just stopped making them.

Luckily, I know myself well enough that I was able to observe what was going on. I issued myself a challenge: Make a Reel a day for a week.

As a life coach, I knew that consistency and frequency would help me get over myself and get unstuck!

So, I did it! I skipped my birthday but made 6 new Reels in a week.

I learned a lot and wanted to share some of the lessons with you.
4 Things I Learned by Making a Reel a Day

  1.  Don't wait for perfection. When I lowered the bar for myself, I was able to call 'done' better than 'perfect'.

  2. You're never too old to learn new tricks. Though this parody of Jojo Siwa TikTokking was DEFINITELY haunting me in the back of my mind, I decided that 39 was NOT too old to try something new!

  3. You learn by DOING, not by THINKING about doing. I've learned so much more in the past week by jumping in and doing the thing, vs. thinking about how I want to be doing the thing.

  4. You can learn to be silly, playful and un-self-conscious by practicing! I used to think I just wasn't fun or playful (#Enneagram1). But I realized that I am, I just don't often lead with those traits. Practicing is bringing those joyful qualities out in me.  :)

Is there anything you've been avoiding because you've built it up in your mind as needing to be a certain way?

Or maybe you're leaning into silliness and play, even though it doesn't come naturally?

I would LOVE to hear what's resonating for you

I noticed something interesting while nervously waiting for election results...

One, I did a ton of laundry. Like, so many loads.

Two, I suddenly decided I needed to roast a pie pumpkin.

Three, I found a few soothing things I could have as much as I wanted of - that never left me with that yuck, I overdid it feeling.

What were they?

(Don't laugh.)

They were drinking hot water... (hey, I told you not to laugh!)

election prayer... (hosted daily by my friend and her husband)

and KEXP radio... (rolling out thematic tunes like Simon & Garfunkel's America, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation and You Are Not Alone by Brandon Summers, which felt like a hug in song form).

It felt great to have some things that encouraged my heart (or soothed my body) and didn't leave me feeling guilty, over-full or with a hangover.

AND, these three things reminded me a lot of Self Care Hack #2 in my free guide. Just got a message about it from a fellow mom this morning:
