Highlights from my life and the Brave Self Care Instagram feed...

I had a bunch of reasons why I "couldn't" join Instagram. My phone was too crappy, I was too old, it wouldn't look as good as other people's feeds. . Then I thought about how I wanted to reach women who were excited to be coached. I learned about the ways people can authentically gather around a hashtag or a topic. And I took one picture (the first one in my feed) and thought, "I could Instagram that." . One year ago I had hardly any idea I would be fully certified as a life coach, trained to start a small business, or have already coached over a dozen women in refining and moving toward their goals. . So thankful for my family, coaching school, supportive church (and teacher @jpkang), internship client @hiratatata, friend-turned-client-turned-social-media-advisor @katrinakubo and many many others for walking with me and encouraging me toward God's call for me in this season. . Is there anything you've decided you "can't" do? Is it really true? . Here's to discovering there's much more you can do than you realized in the new year! . . #selfcare #lifecoaching #ladyboss #solopreneur #smallbusiness #2016bestnine

Babysat my neighbor's 2 month old today. I had my son with me and worried beforehand that I'd have a crying baby on one arm and pouty preschooler on the other. . Thankfully, baby slept almost the whole time and took his bottle like a champ. I'd forgotten what it's like to have that tiny of a person strapped on to your body for hours at a time, to hear their little breathing noises, to see the funny faces they make as they wake up, blinking. . For as sweet as it was, I also remembered the helplessness of sleep deprivation, the endless-seeming rounds of nursing complications, the feeling of always needing to get cleaned from spit up, breast milk, and diaper leaks. (TMI? Not for this crowd, right? □) . Mamas in this early stage, I salute you! You do so much, and you should be proud. It may not be glamorous. It may be repetitive. But your work as a mom is so very valuable, and seen by God. . Tag a mama in the trenches of babyhood and give her a little love. We see you, mama! Keep up the good work. . . #momlife #babystage #honestmotherhood #babymamasunite #babiesofinstagram #mamahood

Coming into the new year thinking about the word "gently". What if I could have a gentle start to my business? Treat myself gently as I learn? Connect with others about coaching in a gentle, not expectation-laden way? . What word is resonating for you in 2017?? . . #lifecoaching #selfcare #solopreneur #ladyboss #entrpreneur #begentle #goeasy #newyearnewgoals

"We didn't call it 'self care' back then..."

This school year I joined a prayer group for moms.  My friend started a local chapter to pray for our kids, their schools, and their staff and teachers.  It's been wonderful! But I didn't sit down today to tell you about the group. I wanted to share a quick story about an interaction I had afterwards.

My friend's mom is a wonderful woman in her 80s. She's worked overseas, been a mentor to someone at my church I greatly respect, and faithfully shows up every week to watch our kids so we can pray. She'd heard about my business and wanted to know more. A bit self-consciously, I explained I was a self care coach for moms, and that I helped moms take care of themselves as they cared for others.

Now, I know there's a need for modern moms to care for themselves, but was that idea going to translate across the generations? I waited for her reaction.

"Oh, that's wonderful," she replied, not missing a beat. "I never had that term, 'self care'. We didn't call it 'self care' back then. We used to call it 'stop and smell the roses'. But that's so important. When you're my age, it takes even more energy and effort to do that, to stop and smell the roses. But it's so needed."

How about that! My takeaways:
  • Self care may be a new term, but the need for it transcends generations. It's not a passing fad, but a true human need.
  • We can't assume self care will get easier with time. We can't wait for when the toddler's out of diapers, for when we get a job with better hours, or even for when we're retired to rest and recharge. It's always going to take intentionality and energy to care for ourselves. Why not start now?

I chose to coach moms of young kids because I knew I could serve them well in this stage of their lives. But the work we do together lays a foundation that lasts a lifetime.
