8 tips for having friends (even in a pandemic)

Last week was our mid-winter break and we hardly had any plans.

I hate planning trips (my mind goes blank if I have to pull a destination out of thin air) and we were resigned to the same ol', same ol' at home (plus more screen time).

But when we heard our good friends were going to drive up to Oregon from southern California, we invited ourselves along and hit the road!

It was a great few days together.

Greg has known Brian and Michelle from their first year of undergrad at Harvey Mudd College (where they all got engineering degrees - any other Claremont people here?).

He was in their wedding, and especially since having kids, our families have become like family to one another.

After coming home I realized:

That great time together wasn't a coincidence.

Ten years ago, Greg and I read the book 3 Big Questions for a Frantic Family (or more likely, I read it and made Greg read a summary of it  :).

It walked us through making a "rallying cry", or top priority, for our family, and the one we landed on was to build a comfortable community.

Having a comfortable community means having people over even if the house isn't perfect. It means letting others know when you lose it on your kid. It means tending to breastfeeding or diaper changes or potty training around each other, knowing they'll understand.

Brian and Michelle become part of our comfortable community because we made it a goal, and the result is over a decade of friendship.

Investing in friendship IS (brave!) self care. Here's how to do it:

8 Ways to Deepen Friendships
(even in a pandemic)
  1. Take stock of who you feel yourself around these days.
Is there anyone who makes you feel yucky or insecure? They're not part of your comfortable community. People who leave you feeling better than before are.

  2. Consider the post-bedtime hang.
I didn't see my own sister for months when the pandemic started because it felt too complicated to get together with the kids safely. Imagine my relief when it finally occurred to me she could come over after bedtime, or we could Zoom with another friend, after the kids went down for the night.

  3. Get creative outdoors.
I know folks who've bought heat lamps, pop-up shelters, or outdoor fire pits just to be able to socialize this winter. If that's not in the budget, think of a nearby park you can be with friends comfortably.

  4. Text, even the dumb stuff.
Headlines that made you shake your head, TikTok videos, or comedy skits are great!

  5. Text, even the deep stuff.
Don't be afraid of being the first to be honest about how you're doing. Chances are it will be a relief to the other person that they can be real with you, too.

  6. Voice messages rock.
Did you know you can send a voice message in a regular text or Facebook Messenger thread? The person on the other end only needs to tap 'play' to hear, and it feels so personal. Look for the microphone icon and give it a try!

  7. Try a collaborative meal.
When you can't eat together, try a meal swap! Drop a meal at a friend's house, or each cook different components of a meal and meet up to swap.

  8. When you just can't do another Zoom call...
Mix it up with a virtual escape room, book or podcast club, or even a co-working time when you both log on, say hi, and then get some work done separately but together.

Bonus: Check Instagram for another of my favorite friendship tips!

Well, my friend, which one of these tips will you try?

"I need childcare fulltime"

I was starting to feel like a broken record.

Every Tuesday, I post on Instagram about how excited I am that our toddler and 8 year old are at my parents' for the morning.

I document picking up a Coffeeholic Dream (heaven in a cup) at my favorite Vietnamese coffeeshop.

Then I spend a BLISSFUL, distraction-free morning focusing on you, dear readers; my clients; and Brave Self Care.

"Boooorrring," I thought as I posted an Instagram Story about my drive to the coffeeshop for the umpteenth time.

Then I got a message from a former client.

"I live vicariously through your Tuesday mornings 😅"

So, here's your reminder, friend.

You don't need to wait for your *ideal conditions* to start living into your best life.

Waiting for the *ideal conditions*...

...like fulltime childcare, total confidence in yourself, understanding of your life's purpose, or permission from your family to finally focus on you...

means it's just not going to happen.

You can take steps now - in the imperfect present - to become the person you want to be.

Now, this is not to say systemic racism, patriarchy, or a broken childcare system are things you should be able to bootstrap your way out of.

The harm done by these systems is real.

But it is an encouragement to do what you can, with what you have, instead of waiting for the ideal conditions to come along.

With a few hours of grandparent care a week and tag-teaming bedtime duties with Greg, I'm running my business, volunteering at school, raising three kids, and trying to be a kind spouse, friend and family member.

I can do all of the above because of many life advantages, but also because I'm fiercely committed to doing what brings me life, even if the conditions are less than ideal (i.e. my kids walk in on Zoom calls to take showers and - this very minute - my toddler's glued to the tablet so I can finish this email).

What questions do you have about not waiting for your *ideal conditions* to start living the life you want? I'm happy to answer, so hit 'Comments' below!

To going for it in the imperfect present,

chocolate chip cookies + zones of genius

Katie's cable situation was out of control.

Her work-at-home desk was a jungle of laptop cables, headphone cords, chargers, docking station cables, and power cords.

She could barely move her legs without unplugging something.

But! Her brother's great at organization.

Katie bribed him with a dozen chocolate chip cookies (she loves baking), found a time that worked for him, and within 20 minutes, he had the whole situation sorted, zip ties and everything.

"He loves doing stuff like that," Katie said, her voice relieved.

"A small step like reorganizing your cables can make a HUGE difference!"

Four Takeaways from Katie's Win

  1. You don't have to do everything yourself
    Really.

  2. Find people to work in their zone of genius to help you
Did you catch that Katie's brother LOVED organizing cables? If you're overwhelmed by something that's not in your wheelhouse, chances are there's someone out there for whom it would be a joy to serve you.

  3. Chocolate cookies are a great bribe
One of Katie's zones of genius? The kitchen. She got to do something she loved in exchange for her brother doing something that he loved. Win-win.

  4. Your physical environment affects your mental health and well-being
What's the most annoying thing about your space right now? Taking small steps to address it could leave you a lot calmer.

What's one way you can apply one of the takeaways above?

Maybe ask for help with an unpleasant task...
Think about who loves doing some of the things you hate...
Bake...
Or tackle a part of your home that's driving you a little batty.

And if you need help making time for yourself, doing things you love, and knowing how to handle hard situations as a parent...

I'd love to help!

My zone of genius is helping people like you drink their coffee while it's hot, do things that make them feel like themselves, and become the calm and present parent they've always wanted to be.
